Bicycle Trips Cottage Grove Lorane 2021

These are some pictures from my most recent local trip in 2021/22 right where I live in Lane County Oregon starting from Eugene and then going on to Cresswell, Cottage Grove, Lorane and Corvallis in the early fall of 2021 and early spring of 2022.

Here the clear cutting is really evident. It is such a sad story. Originally all this land belonged to the Siusalaw Tribe. They and the other Native Oregon tribes were around 1850 forced out of the area by the european settlers. The tribes were put on tiny reservations and lost most of their land. They were forbidden to speak their native language and put in boarding schools away from their villages and families. Many people died and there are mass graves. Any settler could come to Oregon and get free 320 acres of land. 640 acres for married couples. The land had lots of Douglas Fir trees and also Oak and Maple trees. Weyerhauser the huge multinational logging company has replaced these trees after clear cutting them with their new hybrid variety of Douglas Fir, that can only grow for 40 years with a maximum of 3 feet in diameter. It is of very poor quality compared to the several hundred years native Douglas Fir that is 10 feet plus in diameter. The hybrid variety burns very easily and is not strong wood. It is literally like dry kindling waiting to be burnt. Additionally herbicide is sprayed so there is no undergrowth. This further drys out the land, as the undergrowth is used for retaining water. This makes the hybrid forest more susceptible to fires. The oaks and maples of old, provided a natural fire break. So we are literally causing all these forest fires by the way we manage our forests. I have been to the black forest in Germany and they do nothing like this. Weyerhauser has planted no oak or maple trees.

I will have future pics here for more travelogues in the future.
